In the labyrinth of human existence, the search for meaning often stands as a profound, yet elusive quest. Whether in moments of intensive labor or amidst life’s tumultuous challenges, the question of finding sufficient meaning resonates with all of us. In today’s blog we’re going to talk about finding the meaning in our day to day work and in our lives that can provide us with a purpose for being.

The Struggle for Meaning

Note: This post addresses a heavy topic and draws from some key points of Victor Frankl, Author of Mankind’s Search for Meaning.

Let’s be real, here. We’ve all had those mornings we just don’t want to get out of bed and face the day. In that moment it may feel like our lives are going nowhere, our job is a dead end or our romantic interest has no future. The feeling of hopelessness can be so debilitating that we cannot find the strength, the willpower or the focus to carry on with tasks that were once effortless.

The struggle to find meaning in life can manifest in many ways. For some, it arises during periods of transition — after a significant loss, during a career shift, or moving to a different place. Others may grapple with a pervasive sense of emptiness despite outward success or fulfillment of material desires. These experiences underscore a fundamental human need: the desire to feel that one’s life has a purpose and is worthwhile.

When a person has found meaning in his or her life, their face will shine and their eyes will glow. Their spirit will be filled to overflowing and their voice will resonate with an unmistakable joy and calmness. Whatever may have once seemed impossible to this person, is suddenly a small thing to a giant.

Viktor Frankl, the renowned psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, famously posited that finding meaning in life is paramount for human existence. He observed that those who survived the atrocities of concentration camps often did so by maintaining a sense of purpose and future goals, even in the face of unimaginable suffering.

Being down in the trenches doing a labor intensive job day after long day in the repugnant heat or in the blistering cold can sure make you feel like you’re in a concentration camp, and if you can’t find meaning to pull yourself through this, it’s going to be a difficult life. There’s going to be a lot of unrewarded sacrifice, a lot of unhappy days, and a lot of suffering.

A meaningless existence can spiral into other problems, such as with drugs and alcohol or other forms of addiction. It will impact your job, your income, your dopamine levels, your willpower and drive, your testosterone levels, your relationships and your overall means of survival. That is a lot of heavy stuff to leave to happenstance. At some point we must come to terms with the responsibility of creating meaning in our own lives, and set a plan of action to harness and cultivate that meaning.

Psychological Tools for Creating Meaning

In navigating the journey towards a meaningful life, several psychological tools and frameworks can offer practical guidance:

1. Narrative Reframing: Our interpretation of events significantly influences our sense of meaning. Through narrative therapy techniques, individuals can reframe their life stories, focusing on growth, resilience, and personal values rather than solely on adversity or setbacks.

The past is not fixed. It is subject to our interpretation, and that interpretation is subject to how we feel in that moment. When viewed in this context, the past is constantly changing and being re-written. “I was bullied in grade school” is a sad truth that later becomes an inspiration when we find ourselves to be unusually strong and competent in the face of adversity. The bullying in grade school now becomes a different kind of story altogether and a triumphant one, at that.

2. Values Clarification: Understanding and aligning with personal values can provide a compass for meaningful living. By identifying core values — such as integrity, commitment, or perseverance — individuals can make decisions that resonate with their deepest beliefs and aspirations.

If you take account of your values and find kindness to be at the top of your list, you’re not going to feel very good about yourself and you’re certainly not opening up to a meaningful life if you’re acting like a jerk. If you’re acting in kindness, on the other hand, if you’re acting in alignment with your values, you will find purpose and meaning in the action itself.

3. Mindfulness and Acceptance: Practices like mindfulness meditation cultivate present-moment awareness and acceptance of life’s inevitable ups and downs. By developing a non-judgmental stance towards experiences, individuals can find meaning in everyday moments and foster resilience in challenging times.

There are many forms of mindfulness meditation. I like to do this while walking and thinking. I come to terms with my own limitations and accept the lot in life that I have been given.

4. Contribution and Service: Engaging in acts of kindness, altruism, or service to others can instill a profound sense of purpose. Whether through volunteer work, mentoring, or simply offering support to loved ones, contributing to the well-being of others often enriches one’s own life with meaning.

I tried doing some volunteer work for a local museum in a small country town that I used to live in. The experience made me a little angry, I cannot lie. I felt like they were out to take advantage of my good nature! Why am I saying this? Just keeping it real, my friends. Not all tools work for all people!

5. Goal Setting and Achievement: Setting meaningful goals that align with personal values and aspirations provides a sense of direction and purpose. Celebrating incremental achievements along the way reinforces the belief that one’s efforts contribute to a greater purpose.

Embracing Life’s Meaning

Ultimately, the journey towards finding meaning in life is our own responsibility. It involves introspection, exploration, and sometimes, recalibration in response to life’s evolving circumstances. Moreover, it requires embracing the dynamic nature of meaning — understanding that it can emerge from both moments of pleasure and joy as well as moments of pain and suffering.

We take control of the situation and create meaning in our actions and in our lives by aligning with our own values and allocating the time each day to meaningful activities. You may find it in a creative labor, exercise, reading, writing, or something else. By integrating these tools into daily life, we can cultivate resilience, nurture relationships, and foster a sense of purpose that transcends individual struggles and setbacks.

In essence, while the search for meaning may be fraught with challenges, it is also a journey ripe with opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Through self-analysis and introspection we can embark on this journey with greater clarity, resilience, and a more profound appreciation for the richness of human experience. Thus, in every event — whether joyful or sorrowful — lies an opportunity to find and create meaning, illuminating the path towards a more fulfilling existence.

In today’s review we’re going to look at a couple of different wireless mic sets. We previously did a review on the SYNCO Wireless Lavalier Microphone, but since then we’ve had some problems with it and had to order a different mic set! So let’s go ahead and re-review this SYNCO Wireless Lavalier Microphone.

Now let’s take a look at the ULANZI AM18 Wireless Lavalier Microphone. I immediately liked the way they showed up in their own compact charging case that slides snugly in and out of my camera bag.
